Recreation in Our Valley

For over 100 years the valley has been a centre for recreation for people wanting to enjoy the countryside and to participate in outdoor activities. The network of footpaths and bridleways give peaceful ways to walk, mountain bike or horse ride along and across the valley.

Walking

Both the Mid-Shires Way and the Goyt Way long distance footpaths pass down the valley. Many circular routes can be made and a booklet is available at the Roman Lakes cafe with a variety of routes with maps to choose from. The booklet costs just £1.

There are many short walks for families to enjoy and leaflets are available free at the cafe.

Mountain Biking

The many bridleways along and crossing the valley are a great start to longer rides out into the Peak District. With free and safe parking at Roman Lakes and armed with the routes book available at the cafe, you can be sure of some fine riding and spectacular scenery.

Riding along the valley floor is suitable for families whilst still giving the feeling of adventure.

Horse Riding

The bridleways through the valley are suitable for making circular rides. If bringing horses by horse box parking is available at the roadside on Arkwright Road or at the car park at Roman Lakes where there is a hitching post and mounting block. Please do not park anywhere along Lakes Road.

To protect the surfaces walking with horses is permitted but not

Angling

Roman Lakes is a day ticket angling water and a special favourite with carp anglers. There is an onsite Angling Shop and angling coaching is available, juniors and families are especially welcome.

Canoeing

The North Lake is used for canoeing but only for organised groups with BCU qualified instruction. To join an organised group see here

Friends of Our Valley exists to promote the conservation, improvement and use of the Goyt Valley between Strines and Marple Bridge for the benefit of residents, the local community and visitors to this unique area.
